1996

February 9: Microbrew Fest at Angel Fire was a great party. At least a dozen brewers were there, and of course Die Polka Schlingels.
April 12: La Mesa Presbyterian Church, dinner and dancing; a fund raiser for the building fund.
May 8: Edelweis am Rio Grande German-American Club, traditional German dancing and music. Rudy's International Dancers were there, and other acts as well. This was a benefit for the Club, supporting the Club's efforts to keep German culture alive in Albuquerque.
June 30: Arts and Crafts Fair. This annual event at the State Fairgrounds in Albuquerque features numerous bands as musical accompaniment to the main event: a juried show by painters, sculptors, and crafters.
July 6: Summerfest. Summerfests bring together evenings of ethnic foods, music, and dancing. The City of Albuquerque is sponsoring only seven Summerfest ethnic nights while City Plaza undergoes reconstruction. This summer, they'll be on Central Avenue between First and Eighth Streets. With fewer events, we get some interesting combinations. This one was East European and South American so Die Polka Schlingels dusted off its Czech and Polish repertoire.
July 27: Summerfest German and Native American Night
August 31: First Unitarian Church Chocolate Festival. Lots of dedicated chocolate eaters and dancers of all ages came to this one! We found out that you can dance the Macarena to the tune of Jalisco.
September 13: Polka Fest, German dinner prepared by Chef Wolfgang Kraemer of the Rio Rancho Inn. Fund Raiser for Promise Keepers to benefit the family of Leonard Mangano, who had a stroke. Faith Lutheran Church, 10000 Spain NE.
September 27: Oktoberfest, Officers' Club, White Sands Missile Range. The parties who came over the mountain from Cruces and down the range from Alamogordo helped make this a great party. Thanks, Ron and Chuck!
September 29: Oktoberfest, Santa Fe Hilton. Under the big tent Santa Fe went Bavarian. Enthusiastic dancers, both the pros (Rudy's International Dancers) and the folks who came to dine on fine Hilton cuisine and to slurp Warsteiner and Paulaner.
October 5: Microbrew Beer Tasting, Volksmarsch, and ArtFest, Angel Fire. the microbreweries of New Mexico brew some mighty good brews! Eske's of Taos and Assets of Albuquerque were there. Some good ones from Colorado were there too - LeftHand from Longmont, Golden City (same town as that really big brewery), Breckinridge, AND Oasis from Boulder. It happened at the Legends Hotel, right up at the base of the ski hill. Always a good idea to book a room for this one.
October 6: Quail Run Resort, Santa Fe, private party for the residents. Great sausage and potato salad, DPS playing on the plaza with the sun setting over the Jemez Mountains - what a life!
October 9-12: Oktoberfest, Stone Face Tavern. DPS whooped it up from 5:30-8:30 daily. There was actual deutschebier here: Warsteiner was one of the sponsors. The Stone Face has a great selection of beers on tap - German and British as well as our local Rio Grande Outlaw Lager and Desert Pils. The Stone Face is on San Pedro near Paseo del Norte, not far from the site of the Kodak Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta.
October 13: Montebello Retirement Community, Albuquerque
October 18-19: Ruidoso Oktoberfest at the Civic Events Center. Always a lively event, thanks to the folks in Ruidoso, and this year was no exception. There were two bands - the other the Jubilee polka band from San Antonio, Texas - and three dance groups, so the entertainment was non-stop.
October 25: Oktoberfest, Rio Rancho Country Club. The younger folks went home early, but the rest of us boogied until 11.
